Windows 11 is documented. Smart App Control adds a reputation pause that Windows 10 did not always show. Treat it as a verify step.
Allowing an overlay through Smart App Control is not the same as disabling security. Verify the ZIP on safety, extract under your profile, run elevated, attach in Story Mode.
Widget overlays, Xbox Game Bar, and Snap Layouts hotkeys can steal focus. If Insert does nothing, rebind on hotkeys or disable Game Bar for GTA 5.
What Smart App Control actually blocks
On a fresh Windows 11 install, Smart App Control can refuse an unsigned desktop binary before SmartScreen even draws a window. The Event Viewer entry names the policy, not a malware family. Allowing that one file, or running from a folder you already reviewed, is the documented path. Turning the whole feature off for the machine is not required to finish attach, and this site will not walk that as a default.
After the first successful attach, keep GTA 5 in borderless mode. The install guide still applies: Story Mode walkable, overlay elevated once, watermark visible. If the tree still never appears, use troubleshooting instead of redownloading.
Windows 11 extras that steal focus
Copilot, Widgets, Xbox Game Bar, and Snap Layouts shortcuts can swallow Insert or sit on top of a modest column. Turn those off for Grand Theft Auto V first, then rebind only if the key is still dead. A 24H2 feature drop does not require a new ZIP by itself — confirm display mode and elevation before you assume the overlay line moved.
High-DPI laptops on Windows 11 often default to 150% scaling. That shrinks the tree rather than hiding it. Test at 100% or on the primary panel, then put scaling back if the watermark was merely tiny. Requirements for the OS SKU still live on system requirements.
