Troubleshooting the blank overlay

A blank Story Mode session is not one bug. Architecture, extraction, attach timing, elevation, and display mode all produce the same screenshot. The ZIP is the last thing to replace, not the first. Walk the list once, in order, and stop when the watermark appears.

1. Architecture. Task Manager → Details → GTA5.exe should be 64-bit Windows. A 32-bit OS cannot run this line. If the game process itself is missing, you never reached a session — launch official Grand Theft Auto V first.
2. ZIP not extracted. Running from Explorer’s compressed folder deletes temp files mid-session. Extract to a real directory under your user profile. Program Files and the game folder are the two places that invent permission errors later.
3. Story Mode still loading. A black plate is not a walkable session. Wait until you control a protagonist. Attaching during the legal screens or a cloud-save pause is the usual “I clicked attach and nothing happened” report.
4. UAC denied. Without elevation the attach step cannot reach GTA5.exe. Accept the Windows prompt once. Repeated clicks after a denial do not retry elevation; they just spawn extra processes that exit.
5. Exclusive fullscreen. Switch to borderless. High-DPI 4K scaling can also shrink the tree into a corner — lower HUD scale or UI scale in Windows, then cycle Insert and Numpad star.

Silent launches

If the process appears in Task Manager and dies, check the Visual C++ x64 runtime. A missing redistributable looks identical to a corrupt download: no window, no dialog, no watermark. 4K and ultrawide

A modest column can sit off-center on ultrawide or render as a thin gold sliver at 4K. That is a scale problem, not a missing menu. Cycle Insert, then Numpad star. Rebind on hotkeys if a capture tool stole the default. If the tree is visible in windowed mode and gone in exclusive fullscreen, you already found the cause — stay on borderless for overlay work.

What not to do

Do not disable real-time protection as a troubleshooting ritual. Do not mix this ZIP with a patched game executable and then treat attach failure as a docs bug. Do not run two overlay copies at once. If none of the steps above change the screenshot, confirm the filename on the download page and the version on the changelog before you assume the archive is empty.
