Troubleshooting the blank overlay
Five different mistakes produce the same screenshot: nothing on screen. Work them in order before you blame the ZIP.
- Architecture. Task Manager → Details → GTA5.exe should be 64-bit Windows. A 32-bit OS cannot run this line.
- ZIP not extracted. Running from Explorer’s compressed folder deletes temp files mid-session. Extract to a real directory.
- Story Mode still loading. A black plate is not a walkable session. Wait until you control a protagonist.
- UAC denied. Without elevation the attach step cannot reach GTA5.exe.
- Exclusive fullscreen. Switch to borderless. High-DPI 4K scaling can also shrink the tree into a corner — lower HUD scale or UI scale in Windows.
Silent launches
If the process appears in Task Manager and dies, check the Visual C++ x64 runtime. If SmartScreen quarantined the extract, read safety to identify the prompt. If Steam overlay steals focus, see Steam.
4K and ultrawide
A modest column can sit off-center on ultrawide or render as a thin gold sliver at 4K. Cycle Insert, then Numpad star. Rebind on hotkeys if a capture tool stole the default.
